You’ve been in a deep sleep but something somewhere creeped… or is it crept?... into your subconscious, waking you. You were having a very strange, but interesting dream about… about… what was it? It was so vivid! About…
Snakes.
The voice comes to you from far away.
Right. It was about snakes. More like a big snake. At least I think it was.
You shiver. Your skin crawls.
But there was something else.
A boy.
A boy? Yes. A boy. But I don’t think I know who he is. Wait. Why am I having a conversation with myself in my dream…
You’re not talking to yourself. Wake up!
You realize that that far away voice isn’t all that far away. It’s coming from the foot of your bed.
There, sitting in a chair, is a tall man, perhaps six foot one, with dark skin, a shiny bald head, a pencil stuck behind his left ear, reading glasses hanging around his neck, wearing a black tuxedo. The man, not his reading glasses, is wearing the black tuxedo, you clarify to yourself.
“Who?... What?... Who?” Your brain is still in that time between deep sleep and being awake so your thoughts aren’t quite connecting to your words. In your defense you don’t normally have fancy-dressed strangers sitting at the foot of your bed. Which, under normal circumstances, would freak you out and have you screaming for help. But since this has to be a part of your strange but interesting dream, you decide to hold the scream. For now.
I’m Author!
That confirms it. This is a dream. Because not only does he say the words, the words also appear above his head. Like in a Marvel comic book.
“Great. Nice to meet you,” you reply. “I’m Reader.” You laugh at your own dream-joke. So does Author.
Nice to meet you, too, Reader. Although I know you are Santa.
“Of course you know I’m Santa, because this is a dream and I’m dreaming you telling me that I am Santa.”
Author looks you straight in the eyes with a knowing smile.
But you know this isn’t a dream, don’t you, Santa.
Now you start thinking about getting that scream ready because Author, or whoever he is, is right. You have the growing sense that perhaps this is not a dream.
“What do you want?”
Toby Baxter needs your help.
“Never heard of him.”
Well, he’s never heard of you, either, but I know you’ll get along famously. He’s the protagonist in a middle school fantasy adventure series where he…
“A protagawhat?” you ask.
A protagonist. The main character. Anyway, he goes on adventures into RiverHome to help save his river elf friends…
“Uh huh!” you nod as your eyes start to close.
